Living in Iceland

With the advent of the Cold War between the USSR and the Western World, the United States and Iceland developed a partnership. Iceland provided the United States rent-free use of certain agreed upon areas, including Naval Air Station (NAS) Keflavik. Officially, NAS Keflavik was a NATO base. NATO provided personnel and radar warning equipment; the U.S. Navy maintained the base, and the U.S. Air Force, Army, and Marines provided anti-air, anti-submarine, search and rescue, and military security.
